Message from Brent Safer Neighbourhood Team

Dear Brent Community Member.

You will all have seen through the media the events in London over the weekend and again the criminal acts today. As a consequence of intelligence received from various sources including information from yourselves a S 60 stop and search authorisation has been granted for the whole of Brent for a 24 hour period and maybe reviewed at 1710 hours on the 9/8/11.

However whilst there has been no major incidents at Brent at present it is very important that you the community leaders and contacts be so kind as to let police know about anything suspicious that comes to your attention or if that is somewhat difficult to ring crimestoppers on 0800555111.

I think it is really important that I make you aware of some key messages to the community from the Police service.

Key messages:

o              We recognise public concern in relation to the shooting of Mark Duggan and because of this, it is absolutely right that the IPCC independently investigate the circumstances. The community clearly want this and deserve it.

o              We are there for London, we have extra officers on the streets, we are keeping people safe and we are arresting those who are behind these criminal acts.

o             Communities do not support these incidents of opportunist theft and violence.

o            Help keep your community safe and report any suspicious activity or information on offenders to the police or Crimestoppers.

o             We’re not tolerating this mindless criminality. Quick and decisive action by police meant that more than 100 arrests were made at various locations last night. The investigation continues to bring anyone breaking the law to justice.

o             We have the plans and resources in place to tackle any further disorder, deal with normal policing across the city and keep Londoners safe. Every borough will be working closely with their communities to assess the impact of the disorder.

o             The MPS deployed units across London and moved quickly to deal with any reports of criminality as soon as possible.

o             More than 100 arrests were made Sunday night / early hours of Monday. This is in addition to 61 arrests were made in connection with disorder on Saturday night / Sunday morning.

o             The Operation Withern team are continuing their investigation to identify those people responsible for the violence, disorder and crime we have seen to ensure that they are brought to justice.

o             Urge communities to join us in condemning the actions of this violent minority and report any information about those responsible to police. Any information can be passed to police anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

o             We have the resources in place to ensure we police London effectively in the coming days. We have received support from neighbouring forces and all parts of the Met will continue to be flexible and pull together.

o             Mutual aid has been received from Essex Constabulary, Thames Valley Police, Kent Constabulary and Surrey Police. Resources have been split across the four sectors of London to provide a flexible capability.

o             We must remember that the vast majority of Londoners are as appalled by this violence as we are. They are looking to us to make sure that they can go about their business and live in their communities without fear of disruption and violence wherever they are in the city. I know we will not let them down.

o             Throughout the weekend the MPS continued to make sure emergency calls are dealt with across London and major events - like the Community Shield at Wembley and Olympic test events- passed off safely and successfully.

o             We continue to work closely with the local community in Tottenham and are grateful for their assistance. We recognise that they abhor the levels of violence and crime shown, however it is not the wider community who are committing these offences and they do not represent local people's views. We also continue to work closely with a number of partner agencies, including IAG, local authorities and the GLA.
