Preston Road Parking Charges
Dear Cllr Choudhary I would comment on all that has been said about the Preston Road pay and display issue. Firstly, comparisons to there and Harrow are nonsensical inasmuch as Harrow being a large town and Preston Road being but a road that people pass through. How many of you councillors actually come and shop there? No doubt a large majority of you go to supermarkets where the parking is free. What about the car park in Preston Road? Many years ago it was free to park there all day and many commuters from outer areas drove and parked there. They still do this, but unfortunately they now park along any of the side streets both sides of Preston Road causing mayhem because Brent now charge £7.20 per day for the privilege of parking in the Preston Road car park! As chairman of our local Residents' Association, the committee and I have looked into the possibility of having CPZs in our area to stop the commuters parking all day for nothing on our streets. HOWEVER, before this was actually implemented, the prices were hijacked to include emission charges and happily the consultation had to be rejected on those grounds. There is no way residents are going to pay the amounts that are being asked under the emission charges scheme - they would rather put up with the congestion. There has to be a way out and this would be far better implemented by having "restricted" parking schemes introduced both along Preston Road and ALL the side streets which would make the outside commuters change their plans of travel. Unless something is done shortly, our roads will come to a complete standstill. Just common sense and logic needs to be applied. The cost of introducing restricted parking hours would be far cheaper than installing pay meters - it wouldn't (unfortunately for Brent) bring in any extra revenue, and lowering the cost of parking in Preston Road car park would bring in some extra revenue. At present, and I visit up there regularly, Preston Road car park is a white elephant as there are never more than perhaps 6 cars at any one time parked there and those that are stay for a very short period indeed! I am sure it would be beneficial for Mr Kemp, myself and others to meet and discuss this with the powers that be and maybe something beneficial would be arrived at as I feel this has now gone beyond common sense. Kind regards |
